Tips on Making a Child’s Birthday Cake

Making your child a birthday cake that reflects their hobbies or interests is a lovely way to make their day that little bit more special. Yet, if you have not made a customised cake before, knowing the end result will mark such a special occasion can make baking your own seem like a very daunting task.

The key to successfully making a customised birthday cake is to plan ahead, leave plenty of time so as not to feel rushed, and to ensure you have the right equipment. Then, hopefully, you will find it far simpler than expected and actually enjoy the experience.

A good place to begin your planning is by thinking about flavours. If you can only create a design using ingredients you are not sure you child will like, it may not be worth it. Kids tend to like simple flavour so try to stick to vanilla or chocolate and create a picture or design on the top of the cake using coloured icing, or even your child’s favourite sweeties. When using a simple mixture, you can make a cake more unique by either trimming the edges to trace a particular outline or using a unique shape of cake mould.

Finally, in order not to feel under pressure when baking your cake, consider buying your ingredients in advance and doing a trial run, just to ensure your mixing utensils and any cake moulds you might need are up to the challenge. If not, it might be worth investing in some new equipment (which can be used again for future creations), in order to be sure you can produce the best cake possible for the big day.
