Sometimes known as secondary cells or storage batteries, rechargeable batteries are able to be re-charged a number of times. The concept is by no means a new one, and the rechargeable battery has been with us for a couple of decades now.
They’re still going strong, and you can find all different kinds of rechargeable batteries these days. As well as rechargeable versions of AA batteries etc, you can also find device specific rechargeables, i.e. rechargeable battery packs for digital cameras.
What are the advantages of rechargeable batteries?
There’s the convenience. Rather than having to find new batteries each time you’re losing power, you can simply recharge your batteries, providing new power in just a couple of hours or less.
Because of this they’re also better for the environment. The incorrect disposal of batteries can be an environmental disaster. With rechargeable batteries because you’re getting so many more uses out of the battery pack, this puts less of a strain on the environment.
And then there’s the cost savings. Whilst a rechargeable battery might be more expensive in the short term, over the long term it will save you a lot of money, for obvious reasons, i.e. you’ll be buying fewer batteries.
The rechargeable battery is nothing new; however, it is a very modern and effective alternative to single use batteries, which can be expensive as well as less good for the environment.
