Bad skin can be terrible to suffer through. Who would have thought that food could be the answer?
The folk tale of bad food causing acne has been revealed as a myth. This doesn’t mean that health food stores can’t help. Many adult acne problems are caused by the need for specialised diets, such as a dairy free diet. There’s also a fair amount of evidence that a low-GI diet results in better skin. Avoiding chocolate may not be the answer but reaching for some dairy free chocolate instead may be a help.
Once diet is under control, it’s time to treat the skin itself. Again, the answer can be found in the pantry:
Lemon – Lemon juice has a drying effect on oily skin, helping to reduce the appearance of pimples.
Honey – Honey’s antibacterial properties are only just being fully investigated. Manuka honey, in particular, is known to be effective in treating wounds and burns, and its antibacterial effect can be useful for pimples.
Tea tree oil – This definitely isn’t edible, but it’s worth a mention. Studies have found that tea tree oil, which has been used as a folk remedy for a long time, can be effective for many skin conditions, including athlete’s foot and dandruff, and it’s thought that the oil’s antibacterial properties help control acne.
As more natural remedies are subjected to scientific studies, many items in the pantry are being proven effective. When looking for relief, acne sufferers should look to the health shelves first.
