Ever since the launch of the Toyota Fortuner back in 2009, customers have developed a taste for this big and brawny SUV that also comes loaded with equipment. It has the proper road presence of an SUV, dwarfing almost every other car on the road. The first-generation Fortuner did face a lot of criticism from the naysayers, for it came with brakes that weren’t strong enough, did not come with the option of an automatic transmission, and above all, had a cabin very identical to the Innova’s. The brand then gave it a facelift in 2012, which helped continue its already strong sales. In 2016 however, Toyota launched the second-generation Fortuner which looks very radical, has better driving dynamics, feels even more butch, comes bolted on to better suspension and gets a luxurious cabin.
Specifications
The Fortuner has always been a muscular SUV, and this 2016 model is no different. There’s also a lot of chrome all over. Up-front, it gets slender headlamps, a two slat grille with chrome on either sides. Also notice the high-set fog lamps. Alongside the SUV, you’ll see that the large 17-inch wheels are covered by massive wheel arches. And at the rear too, it gets a sleek tail light design with a bar of chrome in the middle. In terms of dimensions, the Fortuner is 4795mm in length, 1855mm in width and 1835mm in height. The wheelbase stretches across at 2745mm. Power delivery from the diesel engine is nice and linear, and acceleration is strong. Refinement levels are good too. Even the petrol-engined version is quiet, but is best used for the city. Ride quality has improved over the older Fortuner and the steering is nice and light. In terms of specifications, it gets a 2694cc, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 164bhp and 245Nm of torque and a 2755cc, 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 174bhp and 420Nm of torque . Paired to the petrol engine is either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox, while the diesel engine too gets the same options. The engine is BSIV compliant. Also, the base-spec trim weighs in at 1855kgs.
Mileage
The Toyota Fortuner has a fuel tank capacity of 80 litres. In terms of mileage, the petrol manual model is capable of returning 10.01kmpl by ARAI and 14.24kmpl for the diesel manual model, in BSIV guise.
Features
Inside the cabin, everything is equally modern as the exterior. The fit and finish of materials is really good, and there’s a lot of leather around. The seats are huge and provide ample comfort. There’s also sufficient headroom and legroom available thanks to the new car being wider and longer, and the third row seats can be folded up. Features include LED projector headlamps, cruise control, eight-way power adjust driver seat, rear air-con vents, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment, navigation, paddle-shifters, auto climate control, rear parking sensors, eco and power drive modes, powered tailgate with memory function, retractable wing mirrors with electric adjust and one-touch tuble second row seats. On the safety front, it is equipped with ABS, 7 airbags, hill-hold assist, stability control and hill descent control.
Colours
The Toyota Fortuner is sold in seven shades: Phantom Brown, Attitude Black, Grey Metallic, White Pearl Crystal Shine, Super White, Avant-Garde Bronze and Silver Metallic. The paint quality and finish for all the shades is excellent. We particularly found the Phantom Brown to be the most striking of all colours, but the one that’s sure to be a hit among Indian car buyers is Super White.
