Setting Up A Driving School

Teaching driving is a great career choice for people who’d like a rewarding role where they can choose their own hours. But what does it take to become a driving instructor and set up a driving school?

What You Need

Anyone who wants to become a driving instructor in the UK needs a full car driving licence that they have held for at least 4 of the last 6 years. Potential driving instructors also can’t have had a disqualification from driving in the 4 years preceding their application. In order to qualify as a driving instructor, learners must pass a 3 part examination.

Examinations

1. The first part of the examination covers driving theory and hazard perception. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions covering a wide range of subjects including teaching techniques and the rules of the road.

2. The next part is a practical examination designed to test driving ability. Drivers must shows that they are able to handle a vehicle in an expert fashion.

3. The last part of the exam tests the driver’s instructional ability. During the test, the examiner will play the role of a student. The driver must demonstrate that they are able to pass their knowledge onto them through practical teaching skills.

Insurance

Driving instructors require specific insurance cover. Having driving school insurance will ensure that learner drivers are covered in the event of an accident, without them having to be named on the policy. Instructors will need PDI insurance while they are training, then ADI insurance once they are qualified.
