Dental Emergencies That Can’t Be Ignored

Although the world is in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic and we are all advised to keep our distance and avoid social interaction with others, there are some scenarios where we have to take the risk. One of which is visiting an emergency dentist. It should be noted that visiting a dentist should only be carried out in the event of a real emergency. If you are in any doubt as to whether your ailment is an emergency or not, be sure to get in touch with your dentist before actually booking the appointment. It shouldn’t be forgotten that your dentist isn’t bullet proof and would obviously prefer not to come into contact with other people unless really necessary.

So, what sort of dental emergency warrants an emergency appointment? There are a number of scenarios that may warrant an emergency dental appointment, some more serious than others but all the same need urgent intervention. For example, you may be experiencing severe pain that at the very least needs the services of specialised dentists, including North Shore endodontics and root canals specialists. This can be especially pertinent if you have started a course of treatment that needs completing or have had a temporary fix that needs to be made permanent.

Reasons Why You Might Need An Emergency Dental Appointment

Please see below for a non-exhaustive list of conditions where an emergency dental appointment may need to be made. Please bear in mind that the conditions listed below can vary significantly in their level of seriousness, but they are all conditions that will require treatment eventually:

  • Gum Abscesses – May be relieved with antibiotics once confirmed
  • Pulpal Abscesses – Same as above
  • Broken Teeth – Emergency treatment may be needed immediately – case by case basis
  • Tooth Trauma from accident – Emergency treatment may be needed immediately – case by case basis
  • Inflammation caused by wisdom teeth
  • Unexplained swelling or constant bleeding
  • Unbearable pain whilst biting

As mentioned, the conditions above have the potential to be serious so medical advice is essential. If your pain is minimal or moderate, try some painkillers such as paracetamol. However, if you feel the pain is due to something serious, call your emergency dentist immediately for advice and to make an appointment.

The COVID-19 virus is having a devastating impact on communities across the world and this probably includes yours. Bear in mind the recommendations for social distancing and risks undertaken by medical and dental personnel before you access their services. Of course, it goes without saying that, if you need emergency dental treatment in Australia or in your country, you will get it but as we can all see, resources may be extremely stretched.

If visiting a dentist for an emergency appointment, don’t be alarmed about the extra level of hygiene and safety checks you may experience. These measures are in place to ensure the health and safety of both patients and dental staff. If you haven’t done so already, now may be a good time to store the contact details of an emergency dentist on your phone or tablet just in case you need them.
